Banknotes

To the extent banknotes were used in Greenland before 1803, Danish notes were used. From 1803 Greenlandic notes started circulating, issued by various institutions as Den kgl. Grønlandske Handel, Handelsstederne i Grønland, Styrelsen av Kolonierne i Grønland and so on. The last Greenlandic notes (issued 1953-67) were withdrawn on July 1st 1967, after this Danish coins and banknotes have been used in Greenland.

From 1911 the notes have had elements of Greenlandic fauna as a part of a otherwise rather simple design. The notes are popular and demands good prices. The 100 kroner note 1953-1967 is a very pretty note, as you will see below:

During WWII small stamplike pieces of cardboard were stamped with Grl. Adm. and denominations of 1, 2 5 and 10 øre and were circulated as emergency coins. Trade certificates were also issued for the use of US troops in Greenland, in denominations of 1, 5 and 20 skilling. Two issues were made, one with a blind stamp to the left, one with an oval stamp in black. The first issue is somewhat scarce, the latter is rather common.
Some private note issues are also known.

Coins

Coins have, until recent times, been a scarce commodity in Greenland, and Danish and other Scandinavian coins have been circulating. During WWII Icelandic 1, 2 and 5 aurar coins were imported and declared legal tender.

In 1926 Grønlands styrelse had coins in the denominations of 25 and 50 øre and 1 krone minted by Den kongelige Mønt in Copenhagen. As the 25 øre coin easily was confused with the 1 krone coin, some of the 25 øre coins were holed during the war. During the war a 5 kroner coin was issued, this was produced in the US. All these coins had the arms of Greenland on one side, a polar bear on the other.

A new 1 krone coin, with the Danish and Greenlandic arms as motif, were minted by Den kongelige Grønlandske handel in 1957, 1960 and 1964. These coins, and those mentioned above, are relatively common.

A number of private coins have been issued, these are generally scarce. Known issuers are:

  • Østgrønland / A. Gibbs & Sons 1, 6, 24 skilling and daler 1863 (rare)
  • Øresund 1, 4, 16, 48 skiling and 1 riksdaler (1859-1865) (rare)
  • Ivigtut 1, 5, 10, 50, 70, 85, 100, 500, 1000 øre and 10 kroner (1875-1922) in many different issues, (all scarce, some rare or unique or unknown in private hands)
  • Kryolith, Mine- og Handelsselskabet 10 and 50 øre, 2 and 10 kroner 1922 - not uncommon. 10 krone 1922 with an unserrated edge is very scarce.
  • Grønlands minedrift 10, 25, 100 øre 1911 - not uncommon.
  • Thule, Kap York 5, 25, 100, 500 øre 1910, 5, 10 kroner 1932 - the lower denominations are not uncommon
  • Angmagssalik (1894-1926) 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 øre -some scarce, essays are also known.
