Italian stamps

(Norwegian text)

Italy, including Italian colonies, have issued a large number of colourful stamps. Here, I will show you some of them. Click on the images, and have a look at detailed scans.

Italy did not become a unified country until about 1860, until then a number of independent states issued their own stamps. After 1860, areas have been added to and removed from Italy, also making for some interesting stamp issues.

The earliest Italian stamps, from about 1860. T he uppermost stamps are from some Italian state that I have not been able to identify - anyone care to help?

Among other, a stamp celebrating Mussolini with Adolf Hitler - one of very few non-German stamps to honour Hitler.

First stamps from the short-lived fascist republic post-Mussolini, then from the Allied occupation of Venice-Giulia (AMGVG=Allied Military Government Venezia-Giulia)
Stamps from Rhodos/the Dodecanese islands - today Greek, but before WWII occupied by Italy, and from Libya, then an Italian colony.
Stamps from Italian colonies in Africa, from Eritrea and from areas ceded to Italy from Austria after WWI.
