Replacement notes

Replacement notes were not used for Issue 1 and 2, Type I or London issues, and were finally discontinued in 1987. For Issue 1 and 2, new notes were printed with the same number as the note to be replaced.

Norwegian replacement notes are not star-marked, but belong to special Litrae, denoted by the first letter of the note number. Most notes have only one letter, but for notes having two letters (notably 10-kr Issue 5 and 10-kr Issue 6) it is the first letter that shows whether this is a replacement note or not.

The system – or lack of it – is rather difficult to understand or remember.

There are three types of replacement notes:

Litra and first numeral of the note number denote these different kinds of replacement notes. E.g., Z8 means a note number starting with the letter Z followed by the numeral 8. Be aware that Z0 means a note number starting with Z followed by any numeral from 0 to 4.

Not all issues use this division of replacement notes in three groups, it is shown where applicable.
